Early on June 12, 2016, a lone gunman opened fire in Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, leaving 50 dead (including the gunman) and 53 injured to become the worst mass shooting in US history and worst act of terrorism on American soil since 9/11. At this incredibly tragic time, our thoughts are with the people of Orlando.
Following the attack, security has been increased at Orlando International Airport, and heightened security measures are also being reported at Walt Disney World and other Orlando theme parks. Travelers should be prepared for additional screening and stay aware of their surroundings.
The shooting comes during a month in which many US cities are holding their annual Pride celebrations. In the aftermath of the attack, Pride events across the country, from San Francisco to New York City, are also ramping up their security.
